What’s better than cherry blossoms in April? Not much, but maybe the movies of April will brighten your skies!
April 5
The Best of Enemies — In one of the better trailers you will see, Taraji P. Henson is a civil rights activist in Durham N.C. in a ten year battle with KKK leader Sam Rockwell. Their lives change as they co-chair a community meeting in response to court-ordered school desegregation. There is power in friendship.
Shazam — Uttering the word “Shazam” transforms 14 year old Billy into an adult superhero. But first, he must learn how to use his powers with the help of his foster brother, Freddie. With Zachary Levi as Shazam, expect things not to be taken too seriously, except when it pertains to the evil Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong).
Peterloo — In 1819, citizens of Manchester demanded government reform and increased voting rights. The militia overreacted leaving 15 dead and 700 wounded. The result– the founding of The Manchester Guardian and the Great Reform Act. This looks like one for us history buffs.
April 12
Little — Be careful who you insult! Regina Hall plays an executive who makes everyone’s life miserable. One of her victims wishes the bully was “little.” Most likely, this will be pleasant, at best, i.e., be careful.
Missing Link — Bigfoot wants to find his relatives in Shangri-La. He enlists intrepid explorer, Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman), and and adventurer, Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana), to help. It looks like 8 feet and 630 pounds of fun. Here’s the trailer:
Hellboy — Let’s see. We don’t have Guillermo del Toro and we don’t have Ron Perlman. We do have an R-rating and the third Hellboy. Hellboy battles an ancient sorceress hell bent on revenge. I’m not holding my breath on this one.
May 19
Breakthrough — No one wants the slot the week before Avengers: Endgame. Nevertheless, I have seen the previews for this faith-based movie more than any other. Based on a true story, John falls though the ice, and upon recovery, has no pulse for 45 minutes. Today, he plans to be a minister. Critics ignore these movies and the audience loves them. Expect no different outcome here.
Red Joan — Reported in Friday Morning Coffee, Judi Dench is the KGB’s longest-serving spy in Britain. Based on a true story, it sounds interesting. Early 27% Rotten Tomatoes ratings are not favorable for it to hit the major theaters. Maybe MI6 is plotting to keep us from seeing their dirty laundry.
Under The Silver Lake — Sam (Andrew Garfield) finds a good looking girl frolicking in his swimming pool. Good. She vanishes. Bad. Mystery, scandal, hidden messages, and conspiracy in Los Angeles ensue. A 54% Rotten Tomatoes rating means this may be another one we won’t see.
April 26
Avengers: Endgame — Finally, all those who died in Avengers: Infinity War get to live again. And, Captain Marvel gets to save the day. And, Thanos gets pummeled and sent to the outer reaches of the Universe, never to return until a bad guy is needed again. I think. Who knows? I’m ready.
Note: Because Dumbo comes out next week, your Coffee will be served Thursday and my Dumbo review will be Friday morning.
