Spend a couple of weeks overseas and it’s already time to look at the October movie offerings.
October 6 — Blade Runner 2049–Set 30 years after the original, this one stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright and Jared Leto. I am not sure we needed a sequel and this one has no early reviews. Hmmmm. . .
The Mountain Between Us–Two people in a hurry hire a private plane to get them to their destination. No flight plan and a mountain, what could go wrong? It stars Idris Elba and Kate Winslet with early 71% Rotten Tomatoes. It is reported that the director asked Winslet to do the breaking-through-the-ice scene four times. Brrrr.
The Florida Project has lackluster previews but is getting lots of love with early 97% Rotten Tomatoes. Willem Dafoe stars.
October 13 — Happy Death Day–Groundhog Day for murder.
The Foreigner–starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan in which a father wants revenge for the terrorist killing of his daughter. Brosnan’s character is unhelpful.
Goodbye Christopher Robin–The story of the author of Winnie the Pooh and his son starring Domnhall Gleeson, Margot Robbie and Kelly McDonald. Watch out for the bees!
October 20 — Geostorm–we all want the weather to be controlled but be careful what you wish for.
This work of fiction stars Gerard Butler, Ed Harris and Andy Garcia.
The Snowman–Is a serial killer on the loose? It stars Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, plus J.K. Simmons, Chloe Sevigny and Val Kilmer.
October 27 — Suburbicon–Our George Clooney directs Matt Damon, and Julianne Moore as they try to survive a mob killing, all the time the violence is being blamed on a black couple moved into the neighborhood, set in 1959. Warning–this is a Coen brothers’ movie and they are always “different.” So far the critics have not been kind with a 43% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer–starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, here is yet another horror-type movie. Woe is me!
I told you that mother! was going to be controversial but viewers have given it an F rating according to CinemaScore. Very few movies get below a C. How long will it be able to hang around?
For those of you who have not yet seen Kingsman 2 (and that includes me), there is apparently a controversial scene where the “hero” plants a tracker in the private area of a female target. It is being criticized as using sex as a form of aggression. You are forewarned.
Less hand-wringing in Hollywood! With the success of IT (over $200 million), and expected numbers of Kingsman 2 (high $40 million) and Lego Ninjago (high $30 million), the September take would be close to $700 million. The highest previous total was $616 million.
Whither Wonder Woman? Gal Gadot is considering an offer to co-star with Bradley Cooper in Deeper, a story about an astronaut sent to the deepest parts of the ocean. Don’t get too excited about this pairing as no production date has been set. 2020, maybe?
Finally Ocean’s Eight is set to premiere June 8, 2018. It’s female cast includes Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Nora Lum aka Awkwafina (she’s a rapper). That is certainly a diverse group and should be fun.
