Assassin
As the above picture shows, it’s not all champagne and roses being an assassin. Jessica Chastain stars in Eve as a hit-woman circumnavigating the planet specializing in high-profile assassinations. Of course, when you work for a black ops organization, something always goes wrong. Colin Farrell, John Malkovich, Geena Davis, Common and Joan Chen make up an excellent cast.
Negasonic Teenage Warhead
For fans of Deadpool 2, you might remember Brianna Hildebrand. She will now jump to the 22nd century as a shuttle pilot to a planet known as Persephone (also the name of the movie). The ship carries 20,000 people on a 50 year journey to a planet twice the size of earth. Hildebrand’s character is born during the trip. Talk about on the job training! Mary-Louise Parker, Malcolm McDowell, Emile Hirsch and Lance Reddick co-star. Hints are that the planet might already have some inhabitants. Rarely are they happy to greet the “invaders.”
You made us wait 17 Years!
It is well documented that the girls fall for Bad Boys. In this case, after Bad Boys I and Bad Boys II grossed over $400 million, it seems like the guys want Will Smith and Martin Lawrence back, too. You got your wish! Bad Boys For Life brings back Detectives Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett in January 2020. Sadly, Michael Bay is not directing so the number of explosions will probably be fewer than expected. Otherwise, let the hype begin.
While talking about sequels . . .
Another famous director, Ridley Scott, made his $400 million plus movie in Gladiator in 2000. So, it must be time for a sequel. You protest that Maximus (Russell Crowe) is dead and so he is. But his son, Lucius, survives, and I am guessing that revenge is on his mind. Evil Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) also died, but Lucius’ mother (Connie Nielsen) should be available. After the original received five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor, expect this to be a lavish production.
This one slipped by me . . .
Set to open on November 16, Green Book looks very good. Notably, it received the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival. It stars Mahershala Ali as a Jamaican-American classical pianist who tours the South during segregation and Tony Lip Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) is his driver. So far, it receives a 93% Rotten Tomatoes rating. In addition to the discrimination, and the bonding between artist and bouncer, expect Ali’s character to deliberate over “where he fits in.”
Queen wins again . . .
When I reviewed Bohemian Rhapsody, I noted that the projected earnings were revised upward to $40 million. By now, you know that was still too low as it earned $50 million this weekend surpassing the opening take of A Star is Born. It turns out that this is the second highest opening ever for a music biopic. The highest ever was Straight Outta Compton at $60 million. Not bad for a movie the critics detest.
In case you haven’t had enough politics . . .
Ryan Reynolds is jealous, again. Afraid that Hugh Jackman’s performance in Frontrunner will overtake his efforts to win Best Actor, Reynolds has spoofed Jackman in an ad, mirroring the politics of our time. It is funny and worthy of 42 seconds of your time. Reynolds knows how to stay in the spotlight. This message is paid for by TMJ!
